Alabama's hospital for insane housed patients in 'concentration camp' conditions

Dirt and rubble lie strewn on the ground, while a staircase flanked by mouldy walls leads to nowhere. It may seem dilapidated and eerie now but life was very different here in 1861 - when the Alabama State Hospital for the Insane first opened its doors. The facility, in Tuscaloosa, was originally built to house 250 patients with mental health issues. Surrounded by acres of farmland, the idea was to give those living there dignity - residents could become part of a community, tending the fields, working at the dairy, or perhaps a job in the kitchen.
